Are heart issues preventable in pets?

Some pets are born with heart conditions (congenital), while others develop them over time (acquired). For congenital conditions, your pet might be predisposed due to their breed or have had the condition passed down to them through their lineage. Acquired conditions on the other hand, can be caused by aging or general wear and tear your pet experiences as they get older. Other factors like obesity can also increase the risk of your pet developing a heart condition.

How can parasite preventives protect my pet’s heart?

Heartworms can cause heart disease. If your pet is bitten by an infected mosquito, heartworms can enter your pet’s bloodstream. Once inside your pet’s body, they can move to your pet’s lungs and heart, growing to be a few inches. Pets can be infected with anywhere from 1 to 100 worms at a time, causing heart and lung disease overtime. Thankfully, your pet is protected against these parasites if they’re taking a preventive medication as prescribed. How do I know if my pet has heart disease?
