Dermatology Services

Our team will treat allergies, parasites, and other conditions which can disturb your pet's skin.

Your pet’s skin provides a protective layer from environmental elements that can be detrimental to their health. It’s important to develop good hygiene practices, like taking your pet to be groomed regularly and checking their fur for pests. If you’re concerned about changes you’ve noticed in your pet’s skin, please contact us at 416-941-8920.

What should I include in my pet’s skincare routine?

Your pet’s skin needs differ, depending on their breed, age and if they have any underlying health issues. For example, as cats age, they need more support so their fur does not get matted. It’s more difficult for them to keep up with grooming themselves. Nutrition plays a key role in ensuring your pet has healthy skin. Try to incorporate foods that provide a balanced diet, like omega-6 fatty acids. It’s also important for your pet to be groomed regularly to ensure their skin remains healthy.

What are common skin issues in pets?

Allergies caused by food or environmental irritants can cause itchy and irritated skin. Grass, pollen and other things in the environment can cause allergic reactions. Just like humans, pets can have food intolerances for proteins like eggs or dairy. Your pet can also develop yeast infections, especially on the warm, harder-to-reach areas of their bodies, like inside the ear canal or between their toes. External parasites like ringworms, ticks and fleas can attach themselves to your pet’s skin and cause fungal infections or irritation caused by an allergic reaction. The best way to protect your pet against external parasites is to have them on a year-round parasite protection plan.

When should I book an appointment?

If you have any concerns about your pet’s skin, it’s best to book an appointment as soon as possible. It might be tempting to try and treat your pet’s skin issues on your own at home but sometimes, over-the-counter or homemade remedies cause more harm than good. If you notice any of the signs below, it might be time to bring your pet in for a visit:

  • Redness
  • Itchiness
  • Flaky or scaly skin
  • Musty odour
